Abstraction Games

Projects

We’ve worked on a multitude of well known game titles over the years and continue to build our reputation for pixel perfection and accurate, faithful game play in our platform adaptations. We enhance and port games to any number of 16 core platforms.

ARK: Aberration

The world of ARK: Survival Evolved just became far larger today as the game’s second expansion pack “Aberration” has gone live. Set in elaborate underground caves, where players must hide from dangerously intense sun that has turned the ARK’s surface into an irradiated hellscape, ARK: Aberration contains a new storyline to explore, dozens of new creatures to tame and more than 50 new items to craft.

Waking up on ‘Aberration’ – a derelict, malfunctioning ARK featuring an elaborate underground biome system filled with new challenges unlike those found on prior ARK maps. Extreme radioactive sunlight, earthquakes, and environmental hazards, ziplines, wingsuits, climbing gear, fantastical creatures like the Rock Drake and Basilisk, and more await survivors throughout these vast caverns. Beware the ‘Nameless’: unrelenting, Element-infused humanoids, which have evolved into vicious light-hating creatures, and the Reapers, massive alien monstrosities which can impregnate foes to spawn their offspring!

Abstraction Games was given the task to co-develop ARK’s next expansion while the developers were working on releasing the game from early access. It was important to provide something new and fresh for the players while also staying true to the core experience and what the developers were looking for. With the core game still receiving regular updates it was also important to regularly incorporate these into the expansion. We also worked on the PS4 adaptation at the same time, which required internal communication to make sure we could already take this into account during development.

8-bit Adventure Anthology: Volume I

8-bit Adventure Anthology is a compilation featuring faithful remakes of three of the best 8-bit point & click adventure games ever made. Originally released between 1987-1991, each stand-alone adventure features the same mind-blowing puzzles, graphics and music that mesmerized generations of console gamers!

Now is your chance to play “Shadowgate™”, “The Uninvited™” and “Déjà Vu™” the way they were supposed to be played, with a controller in hand and worlds waiting to be explored! Set within the realms of fantasy, horror and film noir, these three fantastic stories are a must have for those who enjoy traditional adventure games made of tougher stuff.

To enhance your experience, the compilation features a new 8-bit style menu, beautifully composed chip tunes and the most outstanding ‘old TV’ effects you’ve ever seen.

Created by adventure gamers for adventure gamers, 8-bit Adventure Anthology is the perfect addition to your gaming collection and one you won’t want to miss!

Shadowgate™: The wind whistles through the halls as you step through the stone threshold. You’ve just entered Shadowgate, a once shining castle, now an evil, dark smouldering ruin. Swallow your fear and take up your torch. You are the ‘Seed of Prophesy’ and in your hand lies the fate of the world itself.

The Uninvited™: The last thing you remember was a figure appearing in the middle of the road and the sound of your sister’s screams over the screeching tires. When you come to, you discover two horrifying things: your sister is missing and the mansion that now looms before you seems to be calling your name…

Déjà Vu™: It’s 1942 and you wake up in a seedy bathroom with no idea how you got here or, for that matter, who you are. You grab a .38 hanging on the door, stumble up the stairs and find some stiff slumped over a desk with three bullet holes in him. You check your gun. Three bullets are missing. This is gonna be a bad day.

The King Of Fighters Xiv Art

The King of Fighters XIV

The King of Fighters XIV is the newest entry in the King of Fighters series since 2010, bringing the same iconic gameplay from earlier entries, with 50 characters in the base game each duking it out in multiplayer battles or through a single-player story mode.

Maintaining the smooth controls and flow of the battles when adapting from PS4 to PC was a central focus as with any fighting game – when reactions and intuition are a key part of the gameplay, it’s even more important to make sure your game is properly adapted to new platforms, since minor irritations or carelessly clunky controls will seriously damage the player experience. We take the extra care to avoid common pitfalls and aim to ensure that players won’t even be aware that the game wasn’t originally developed for their chosen platform!

The Sexy Brutale

A Murder-Mystery Adventure where the player is trapped in a never-ending masked ball at The Sexy Brutale casino mansion, reliving the same day over and over, surrounded by intrigue and murder as they try to uncover the truth behind the secrets of The Sexy Brutale.

Demonstrating the flexibility of Abstraction Studios, during this adaption we were not taking a finished product from PC to consoles, but instead worked with the developers of the Steam version of the game while the game was still work in progress. This meant there was a constant stream of dependencies back and forth, and required thorough and effective communication from both sides. Luckily we’re well practiced at this kind of collaboration, and it was a pleasure to work with a new team of like-minded people as we adapted another beautiful game.

Danganronpa 1-2 Reload

Danganronpa 1-2 Reload merges the renowned Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. The Danganronpa series revolve around the elite high school; Hope’s Peak Academy. Every year the school selects “Ultimate” students along with one average “Ultimate Lucky Student”.

In Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc you’ll dive into a series of class trials and expose the lies and contradictions of your classmates in order to find out who’s behind each grisly murder. In each trial, you’ll have to use the evidence and testimony collected during your investigation to literally shoot down your opponent’s assertions.

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair takes you to Jabberwock Island – once a popular tourist destination, this now uninhabited island remains oddly pristine. You and your classmates at the elite Hope’s Peak Academy have been brought to this island by your super-cute teacher for a “lovey-dovey, heart-throbbing school trip.” Everyone seems to be having fun in the sun…until Monokuma returns to restart his murderous game! Trapped on this island of mutual killing, your only hope of escape rests in solving the island’s mysteries. But be warned—sometimes the truth can be its own despair…

The combination of both games in one product raised some challenges relating to the overall size of the game – including the content from both titles and with all three supported languages risked exceeding 5GB, which would have called for a progressive download system. It was a valid option that we were prepared for, but since then that 5GB limit has been increased, so it fortunately never became an issue.

Another thing one has to deal with is an upper-limit on the number of trophies/achievements for a single product – however, there had already been an earlier PS Vita release combining both games which also had shared trophies.

Finally, we had to fix some bugs and memory leaks that would appear if the player switched between the different versions frequently – the kind of issue that could easily have been missed with a less carefully done port.

ARK Survival Evolved

As a man or woman stranded naked, freezing & starving on a mysterious island, you must hunt, harvest, craft items, grow crops, & build shelters to survive. Use skill & cunning to kill, tame, breed, & ride Dinosaurs & primeval creatures living on ARK, and team up with hundreds of players or play locally! The Scorched Earth expansion leaves players stranded naked, dehydrated and starving in a vast desert, where the search for water becomes vital.

Abstraction Games worked on ARK while it was still in Early Access, which entailed a different process compared to a typical adaptation. Normally we would receive final material, and go to work on that. With a title still in development we had to handle the regular updates and incorporate them into our adaptation. Sometimes we even had the opportunity to fix issues which were not solved in the original game itself yet!

Verdun

Verdun is the first multiplayer FPS set in a realistic World War One setting. The merciless trench warfare offers a unique battlefield experience, immersing you and your squad into intense battles of attack and defense.

The game takes place on the western front between 1914 and 1918, in one of the bloodiest conflicts in world history. The developers were inspired by the infamous Battle of Verdun France in 1916. The game offers 4 distinct game-modes; Frontlines, Attrition, Rifle Deathmatch and Squad Defense. Also many historically accurate features are included such as realistic WW1 weaponry, authentic uniforms, gore and maps based on the real battlefields of France and Belgium.

As with ARK, Verdun received a number of updates while we were working on our adaptation, which meant that we had to incorporate those into our work. While this certainly keeps you on your toes, we have the experience to be able to handle these kinds of in-progress additions without getting bogged down and risk compromising the final quality of the adaptation.

Kick and Fennick

Kick & Fennick tells the story of a young boy named Kick who finds himself waking up in a bright and colorful, yet dangerous world. Armed with a giant gun that can be used to shoot down enemy robots, while also allowing him to make huge jumps using the weapon’s powerful recoil, Kick searches for a way to the highest tower in the city to find a new energy core for Fennick, his helpful flying robot friend. Together they must explore this strange, new world, jumping and shooting their way through 45 levels of collapsed skyscrapers, treadmills, bouncypads, magnets, teleporters, and a big guard robot that is never far behind!

“With Kick & Fennick, we tried to create a unique platforming experience. We’ve had fantastic reactions and can’t wait for a wider audience to be able to play through it,” said Vincent Bonefaas, Co-Founder of Jaywalkers Interactive. “Platforming fans looking for a breath of fresh air in the genre should definitely check it out, and we can’t wait to hear their feedback.”

Taking charge of both publishing and adapting a game allowed us to manage timelines, pricing and additional features more effectively – of course we’d still consult closely with the original developers to ensure that they were happy with our choices.

Abstraction Games is proud to have helped to release and publish Jaywalkers first masterpiece on the big screens!

Deadlight: Director’s Cut

In a world destroyed by a zombie outbreak, all hope of a cure has died, now only survival remains. Deadlight, the iconic side-scrolling horror game reanimates itself once more on next-gen consoles. Now Deadlight: Directors Cut will deliver the most compelling, complete Deadlight experience yet.

Set in an apocalyptic 1986, you play Randall Wayne, a lone survivor searching for his loved ones in the ruins of Seattle. Through tense platforming and deadly encounters with the undead, known as ‘shadows’, you’ll either fight using scarce resources, or navigate the environment to run and hide from them.

Development
When working with visual novels you have to bear in mind that there is a lot of UI, audio, art and text involved, and the game itself will likely be extensive with many different paths for players to explore, which can make for convoluted steps to reproduce bugs or check fixes. Our excellent QA and general project experience meant that we were able to work around any issues here without delaying the overall progress of the adaptation.

Broforce

When evil threatens the world, the world calls on Broforce – an under-funded, over-powered paramilitary organization dealing exclusively in excessive force. Brace your loins with up to four players to run ‘n’ gun as dozens of different bros and eliminate the opposing terrorist forces that threaten our way of life. Unleash scores of unique weapons and set off incredible chain reactions of fire, napalm, and limbs in the name of freedom.

One of the best ways to enjoy Broforce is playing coop with your friends – and this turned out to be quite the challenge in adapting the game from PC to PS4. Sony has rather strict network policies compared to Steam, which necessitated a complete overhaul of the original local coop system. This was a lot of work, and required a lot of extra QA testing… luckily this involved playing a lot of Broforce, which was awesome!

Toki Tori 2+

Toki Tori 2+ is a Metroidvania style puzzle adventure, where our unlikely yellow hero may be the star of the show, but he won’t get anywhere without the creatures he meets along the way. Armed with just the Whistle and Stomp moves, he can influence and make use of these strange creatures’ unique abilities. But what’s up with that black goo? It’s threatening your home world! Your goal is to get to the core of the corruption and save the island!

Toki Tori 2+ had different publishers for the digital and physical versions of the game – this meant that new products had to be defined on Sony’s backend system because we couldn’t reuse the entries for the digital versions of the game. It also required full new resubmissions, and we had to maintain twice as many SKUs (two per region, four total), but this is the kind of thing we take in our stride.

Abstraction Games once again made sure the adaptations don’t feel like a port but like games developed specifically for their new hardware. The user interface is completely revamped to make the game very accessible using a controller. The menu graphics have been upgraded and the layout re-imagined to make sure that the full breath of character tweaks and customization options are accessible with ease. When Blobolonia is threatened by an evil emperor, the blob comes to earth looking for help. Instead, he finds a young boy. Help the blob dethrone the evil Emperor that’s terrorizing Blobolonia and establish a friendship with the blob that will last a lifetime.

Along with many other platforms, we adapted A Boy and His Blob for Linux, which can be tricky. Issues such as drivers not being up to par with those on Windows or Mac, the window manager often being rather unfriendly to users, and the sheer number of different distributions out there can make things interesting to say the least! But Abstraction Games has the expertise to negotiate these challenges, and we’re happy that the Linux version of A Boy and His Blob meets our high standards.

Gods Will Be Watching

Gods Will Be Watching is a minimalistic “point and click thriller” centered on despair, commitment, and sacrifice as players face narrative puzzles and moral dilemmas that will affect both the lives of your team and the people you’re are sworn to protect. Set against the backdrop of an interstellar struggle, Gods Will Be Watching follows Sgt. Burden and his crew in six tense chapters from hostage situations and wilderness survival to biological weapon prevention and agonizing torture scenarios. Each decision is crucial and players will need to choose between the lives of their team and the saving the world from genocide. There’s no good or evil, just decisions, with only you and the gods as a judge to your actions.

While the differences between mobile and PC hardware are getting smaller, they were still the biggest challenge with this adaptation. This is an area where our technical knowledge and experienced team really made a difference, and allowed us to overcome issues that other studios might have had difficulty with. We also had our custom GameBaker environment which helped a great deal in getting the existing UI code working well on touch devices – you can read more about GameBaker here.

Heroes of Loot

Heroes of Loot combines the action of twin-stick shooters with the dungeon crawling of rogue-likes. You’ll find yourself in the middle of hordes of ghosts, skulls, cyclops, critters and much more.. survive using quick reflexes, level up to improve your weapon, and if you have time complete some quests for extra loot and upgrades. How deep into the dungeon can you go?

As well as bringing the game to PS Vita, Abstraction Games also published Heroes of Loot on PS Vita. When adapting twin-stick shooters, good controls are vital. For Heroes of Loot, this meant creating a control scheme which felt true to the original, but simultaneously worked well on the device. Doing an adaptation means putting a lot of effort into making the controls excellent rather than just functional. Due to the streamlined gameplay in Heroes of Loot it wasn’t necessary to remap controls, so most of our time working on the controls was spent perfecting the stick offset curvature.

Whispering Willows

Whispering Willows is an adventure, horror themed game that features a dark and rich narrative, beautiful 2-D visuals, and haunting melodies that will leave you yearning for more. The player takes on the role of Elena, a determined young girl with the extraordinary ability to project her spirit outside of her body. Players need to make use of Elena’s corporeal and ethereal forms to overcome obstacles, solve the riddles of Willows Mansion’s enigmatic specters, and find Elena’s lost father.

Producing a quality UI that will be intuitive for users of different platforms is something we’ve had a lot of practice at over the years, and Whispering Willows is one of the beneficiaries of our experience in this area. We took on the task of adjusting and reworking the original code to allow for the perfect UI on the new platforms with no fuss for the developers. This can be a labour-intensive process, but when you’re passionate about the work you do (something else that puts our adaptations above regular ports) the results are well worth it!

Gunpoint

Gunpoint is a stealth puzzle game that lets you rewire its levels to trick people. You play a freelance spy who takes jobs from his clients to break into high security buildings and steal sensitive data.

Gunpoint was the second GameMaker game we adapted, with the original Hotline Miami being the first. We would go on to put a significant effort into improving the underlying technology we used in GameMaker adaptations, which would be used in Hotline Miami 2, Gods Will Be Watching and the Hotline Miami Android release. You can read more about this technical achievement, which would become GameBaker, along with our work on Hotline Miami 2 here.

While working on the Gunpoint port it really hit home just how many little things can go wrong when you’re running a simulation of something you don’t fully control and can’t easily get compete information about. In case this wasn’t enough, Gunpoint also came with a level editor which relied on implicit behaviors in GameMaker itself, which we had to investigate and accommodate in the new environment we created for the adaptation. In the hands of a less experienced studio, you might have expected to see the level editor simply disappear on new platforms, dismissed as being ‘too difficult to port’, but part of the adaptation process is rejecting such decisions and making sure the complete game makes it to the new platform, with all the bells and whistles. Despite the challenges, that’s what we did with Gunpoint in 2014 as we moved it to a new engine of our own design, which opened the door for the editor as well as Mac and Linux ports, while boosting performance for everyone.

Don’t Starve: Giant Edition is an uncompromising wilderness survival game full of science and magic. Enter a strange and unexplored world full of strange creatures, dangers, and surprises. Gather resources to craft items and structures that match your survival style.

The adaptation of Don’t Starve from PC to PS3 involved some complex technical work in applying optimization strategies to system memory usage, and caching and reusing memory in a smarter way than is necessary on PC. This kind of work requires extremely thorough testing across every area of the game to make sure things don’t break in specific cases when replacing seemingly redundant logic and making other changes.

The hard work done by our QA and the care we take to make sure that things not only work, but work well, is one of the advantages of an adaptation over a basic port. If you choose Abstraction Games you’ll never be left stuck with a port that technically works but suffers from terrible performance, and Don’t Starve is an excellent example of not only our technical expertise, but also our passion for the games we are adapting.

Titan Souls

Between our world and the world beyond lie the Titan Souls, the spiritual source and sum of all living things. Now scattered amongst the ruins and guarded by the idle titans charged with their care, a solitary hero armed with but a single arrow is once again assembling shards of the Titan Soul in a quest for truth and power.

Adapted for both the big screen and the small screen, we made sure it had perfect controls, a silky smooth frame rate and cross save between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. Our proprietary engine SilverWare made the adaptation process very smooth for all platforms.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number

The sequel to the acclaimed top-down shooter Hotline Miami, the killing continues in Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. There are more characters, smart twists on the original gameplay, and a continuation of the surreal story.

After working together on Hotline Miami, Devolver Digital and Dennaton Games decided to extend our collaboration and get Abstraction Games on board right from the start. We further developed our in-house technology that allows maximum creative freedom for Dennaton, while ensuring a simultaneous and smooth launch across all platforms. With our help, the Hotline community is now also exploring their own creative freedom via the Hotline editor with integrated Steam Workshop support.

Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition

Duke Nukem 3D is one of the iconic shooters of the 90s, mixing over the top action with pop-culture satire and risqué humor. Featuring highly destructible environments full of secrets and weapons from chain guns to shrink rays, Duke Nukem 3D has it all, and now you can play it on PS3 and the PS Vita!

For this definitive version we went all out and included Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition and three unique expansions. We made sure players can enjoy the original carnage and cross-play between PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3. Naturally we included cross save and included the much requested replay feature along with tons of leaderboards.

Bloodrayne: Betrayal

The original video game femme fatale, Rayne, has returned to battle and feed in a brand new hack ‘n slash adventure. Slay ghastly enemies as Rayne, the sexy dhampir with superhuman strength, speed, and agility, recruited by the vampire hunting Brimstone Society for one last mission. The target is a lavish, yet sinister ball in a secluded castle with plenty of dark and gruesome surprises. With the help of a mysterious friend, and members of Brimstone, Rayne must infiltrate the manor, take out the fiendish horde, and stop an evil master plot once and for all.

It was a pleasure to work with Midnight City once more on a WayForward title, after we previously adapted Double Dragon Neon for Steam.

Double Dragon Neon

Legendary martial artists, Billy and Jimmy Lee return in this creative re-imagining of the classic beat ‘em up, Double Dragon Neon. Fight your way through countless henchmen including Linda and Abobo on your way to rescue the love of your life, Marian! Trained in the special form of martial arts called Sōsetsuken, hunt down and defeat the evil Skullmageddon!

Getting beat ’em up game controls in adaptations to feel good on their new platforms can be challenging, but with Double Dragon Neon the controls are designed to inspire a nostalgic coin-op feel and are rather ‘digital’. This meant we had to maintain that impression in our adaptation, which in the end didn’t require too much tweaking to achieve.

The Chaos Engine

Prepare for the dark world of The Chaos Engine, a steampunk Victorian age in which one or two players must fight the hostile creations of the Chaos Engine across four different landscapes and take part in the ultimate battle. Choose from six hard-nailed mercenaries each with their own unique weapons and skills. Those who have the strength and skill to overturn the Chaos Engine will be remembered.

Abstraction Games Trivia: this game is 25+ years old, originally made for the Amiga home computer. What did we do? We took the original Amiga assembly source code and ported that to C++, of course! It was done in a rather unconventional manner too, but that’s all part of today’s work in the adaptation business.

(The Chaos Engine was originally known as Soldiers of Fortune in North America)

Hotline Miami

Hotline Miami is a high-octane action game overflowing with raw brutality, hard-boiled gunplay and skull crushing close combat. Set in an alternative 1989 Miami, you will assume the role of a mysterious antihero on a murderous rampage against the shady underworld at the behest of voices on your answering machine. Soon you’ll find yourself struggling to get a grip of what is going on and why you are prone to these acts of violence.

We managed to get the game running with a smooth 60 frames per second on both PlayStation®3 and PlayStation®Vita and we greatly improved the stability of the game to a rock-solid level. The controls are completely optimized for both systems with an improved locking system (using the front touch screen of the PSVita). Naturally, we added Trophies, Online Leaderboards, Cloud saving and synchronization between the two console and to top things off we even added a completely new mask, exclusive to the PlayStation® versions.

Cut the Rope

We’ve partnered up with Chillingo to bring one of the best iOS games ever to Nintendo’s popular handheld the Nintendo DSi. This unique port included a re-imagining of the lay-out to fit the unique dual screen layout of the device and we optimized the great original artwork to look as crisp as it did on iOS.

For those few of you who haven’t had the chance to play this game, here’s a quick summary. One day you receive a mysterious box, and in this box lives a little green creature called Om Nom. Your job in each of the 125 levels is to get the rope-suspended candy to Om Nom, by strategically cut the rope(s) at the right spot, on exactly the right moment.

Angry Birds

Angry Birds is by far the most recognized game of the last decade and definitely put mobile gaming on the map. We’re very proud to have adapted Angry Birds to PlayStation®3 and PlayStation®Portable via the online minis channel. Our version of Angry Birds features a new way to flick your birds across the screen using the analog stick and features optimized artwork for TV and PlayStation®Portable displays.

Abstraction Games Trivia: we started working on our adaptation before it became the massive hit everyone knows it as today. It was clearly a good game with huge potential, but like everyone else, we were still shocked by the overwhelming success the game enjoyed!

Dracula: Undead Awakening

In this chilling top-down shooter, you play a vampire hunter must combat hordes of undead enemies like zombies, ghouls, werewolves, vampire brides and more. Can you stand the night? You begin with a simple gun and slow monsters, but as the time passes, they grow stronger and faster, dropping better weapons. You will also be able to gain “perks”, as you earn enough experience.

Dracula Undead Awakening was first released with great reviews on the iOS devices where it was called iDracula. We’ve taken the original and added plenty of control options for the Nintendo Wii (WiiWare) version and a unique statistics screen on the Nintendo DSi. Leaderboards are a natural fit, so we added that to the WiiWare version too.
